TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The deadline for former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) to appeal a two-month extension of his detention by the Taipei District Prosecutors Office passed on Monday (Nov. 11), with Ko taking no action to appeal.
Ko is accused of improper financial dealings with the Core Pacific Group, including accepting bribes to increase the ratio of developable land associated with the Core Pacific City redevelopment project. Ko maintains his innocence, per UDN.
Ko is the chair of the Taiwan People's Party (TPP). A TPP representative said prosecutors had yet to obtain a confession or produce clear evidence since taking Ko into custody.
The TPP continues to support Ko and has called on the Taipei District Prosecutors Office to “prosecute him if there is evidence, and release him if there is no evidence.” The TPP also allege prosecutors have leaked information to the media to manipulate public opinion against Ko.
