TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) criticized Indonesia for backing Beijing’s “one China” principle on Monday (Nov. 11).
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) inked a joint statement on bilateral cooperation on Saturday (Nov. 9). In the statement, Indonesia affirmed its “consistent adherence” to China’s claim over Taiwan on the basis of UN Resolution 2758.
MOFA said that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other and the Chinese Communist Party has never governed Taiwan. Any distortion of Taiwan's sovereignty cannot change the internationally recognized status quo in the Taiwan Strait, the ministry said.
The ministry added that UN Resolution 2758 does not mention Taiwan's political status. “The resolution does not reflect, nor is it equivalent to China's so-called ‘one China’ principle,” it said. MOFA called on the international community to counter China's misinterpretation of the resolution to mislead global opinion.
Under Prabowo, Taiwan hopes to continue deepening bilateral relations with Indonesia, especially in trade, agriculture, and education, MOFA said. The two countries share universal values such as democracy and freedom, and MOFA added that it looks forward to working with Indonesia to contribute to regional peace and prosperity.
