TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A falling piece of steel caused delays and minor damage to several train cars on a Taiwan Railways line on the east coast just before midnight on Saturday (Nov. 9).
Passengers on Taiwan Railways Ziqiang No. 256 were surprised by the sound of a heavy object smashing into the side of the train. The incident triggered an onboard alarm, and the train was brought to a stop about 250 meters from Hanben Station in Yilan, reported CNA.
Six cars were damaged, which included some cracked and broken windows. Passengers evacuated the train and were shuttled to Hanben Station around 1:20 a.m., according to reports.
After an investigation, Taiwan Railways announced that part of the frame for the tram line over the track collapsed at 11:54 p.m. near the southern entrance of the Guanyin Tunnel. The damage was caused by a large piece of steel, barely suspended, which bounced against the train as it exited the tunnel.
The damaged train was towed to Hualien for repairs at 5:29 a.m. on Sunday (Nov. 10). Taiwan Railways Corporation began immediate repairs on the damaged tram line, completed by Sunday afternoon.
Commuters experienced delays while the tram line was being repaired, as train traffic was restricted to a single track. Normal two-way traffic resumed between Heping and Nan’ao around 1:49 p.m., per CNA.
