TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Earlier this week, a delegation from Taiwan made a visit to Sweden’s legislature, known as the Riksdag, to discuss Taiwan’s international participation and cross-strait relations.
The delegation, led by the Deputy Chair of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Shen You-chung (沈有忠), was invited to attend a symposium by the Swedish-Taiwan Parliamentary Association on Nov. 7. The meeting was convened by Boriana Åberg, the chair of the STPA, reported RTI.
In total, 10 lawmakers from multiple Swedish political parties attended the meeting. This included Mathias Tegner and Joar Forssell, both members of the Riksdag Foreign Affairs Committee.
The Taiwanese delegation also included Deputy Director of Taiwan Centers of Disease Control (CDC), Luo Yi-chun (羅一鈞), and Taiwan’s representative in Sweden Klement Gu (谷瑞生).
During the symposium, Shen outlined Taiwan’s strategy to ensure cross-strait peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. The four major pillars of this strategy are:
- Improving Taiwan’s capacity for national defense
- Building a robust economy
- Strengthening bilateral relations with democratic allies
- Using principled leadership to engage in cross-strait diplomacy
Shen and others also discussed the challenges Taiwan faces for meaningful participation in international forums, such as the World Health Organization and Interpol. Taiwan’s representative in Stockholm, Klement Gu gave a speech on Taiwan’s efforts to assist the global effort to mitigate the looming dangers of climate change.
CDC Deputy Director Lee talked about Taiwan’s initiatives to boost cooperation and exchange in areas of health and pandemic prevention. He expressed his hope that these efforts will lead to more meaningful international involvement and representation in the future.
On the Swedish side, STPA chair Aberg said that Sweden has proposed several measures to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international forums. She added that Sweden was happy to host the Taiwan delegation for the symposium and welcomes enhanced cooperation with Taiwan movin11g forward, per RTI.
