TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Wednesday evening (Nov. 6) congratulated Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on his election win.
The ministry offered its sincere congratulations to the president-elect and Vice President-elect JD Vance. It said it has asked the Taiwan representative office in the US to forward a letter from President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) to Trump congratulating him on his victory.
In addition to his congratulatory message, MOFA said Lai expected to further strengthen cooperation with the new Trump administration based on a “close and friendly partnership” between Taiwan and the US.
The ministry said Taiwan and the US not only share core values such as freedom, democracy, and human rights, but are also “comprehensive partners with close cooperation in various fields such as politics, security, and economy.”
It said Taiwan's government looks forward to cooperating closely with the new US government, strengthening bilateral relations, and working together to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and the world.
Earlier Wednesday evening, Lai congratulated Trump on X and said he is confident the longstanding partnership between Taiwan and the US will “serve as a cornerstone for regional stability & lead to greater prosperity for us all.”
In a statement issued by the Presidential Office website, Lai lauded the Trump and Vance victory. He also thanked President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for “their staunch support for Taiwan during their time in office.”
