TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Police detained three suspects after a suitcase containing 18.65 kilograms of marijuana was found abandoned at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport after a flight from Thailand, reports said Wednesday (Nov. 6).
Even though nobody picked up the luggage, the Aviation Police Bureau tracked down two Thai nationals and a Taiwanese suspect, per CNA. The incident occurred on Aug. 30.
The Taiwanese suspect apparently had a difference of opinion with his handlers and left Terminal One without the suitcase. Police found the marijuana inside the luggage and tracked down two Thai travelers.
The pair, who spoke neither Mandarin nor English, were detained the following day at a hotel in Sanchong, New Taipei. Through an interpreter, they said they were going to be paid NT$47,000 (US$1,450) to bring the drugs into Taiwan, but they left the suitcase because they were worried the contraband would be found.
A man named Hsieh (謝) was identified as the individual set to pick up the drugs at the airport. All three suspects were investigated by the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office and charged in October with breaking anti-drug legislation.
