TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) praised Taiwan-Paraguay ties during a meeting with Paraguay Senate President Basilio Gustavo Nunez Gimenez on Tuesday (Nov. 5).
Lai thanked the Paraguayan government for supporting Taiwan’s international participation. He said the two countries are mutually supportive partners that have achieved fruitful results in fields, including education, healthcare, and agriculture, according to the Presidential Office. Taiwan looks forward to continuing collaborative projects with Paraguay that benefit both peoples, he said.
The president emphasized that Taiwan and Paraguay share the values of democracy and freedom. He hoped Nunez and his delegation would continue to support Taiwan, standing together against authoritarian expansion to protect shared values and promote global democracy, peace, and prosperity.
Nunez said his visit reaffirms the enduring 67-year friendship between Paraguay and Taiwan. This bond is based on a steadfast commitment to mutual respect and genuine friendship that cannot be replaced by “monetary considerations.”
The senator said Paraguay’s parliament strongly opposes regional tensions and advocates for the right to free navigation and mutual respect for human rights, freedom, and democracy.
Nunez said he also came to Taiwan to understand the key factors driving Taiwan’s prosperity and development. He conveyed Paraguay President Santiago Pena’s message that Paraguay is not only a good friend of Taiwan but also a steadfast partner in the shared pursuit of prosperity.
The delegation arrived on Monday and will meet with high-level government officials before departing on Friday.
