TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Airlines mobilizing Airbus A380 planes helped to clear a backlog of flights at Taiwan’s main airport following Typhoon Kong-rey, Taoyuan International Airport Corporation (TIAC) said Friday (Nov. 1).
More than 500 domestic and international flights were canceled Thursday (Oct. 31) as the storm barreled across south and central Taiwan. The typhoon also disrupted the delivery of luggage to aircraft, while extra taxis were deployed to Taoyuan due to the high number of delayed arrivals.
Because Kong-rey weakened to a tropical storm and moved away from the country on Friday, 675 flights went ahead as normal, though 50 were still canceled, per CNA. TIAC cautioned travelers to arrive early as the time slots between noon and 4 p.m. and between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. were likely to see heavy traffic.
For the first time, there would be five Airbus A380 planes arriving or leaving during the same period, according to TIAC. Asiana Airlines of South Korea and Emirates of Dubai had called in the extra aircraft to make up for canceled earlier flights. The full-length double-deck plane can seat 525 passengers.
Rescheduling and cancellations could still affect flights during the weekend, so passengers should consult the airlines’ websites and apps, TIAC said.
