TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A delegation of lawmakers from Estonia is visiting Taiwan this week to discuss bilateral cooperation.
The six-person delegation landed in Taiwan late on Wednesday (Oct. 30) and will remain in the country until Sunday. The group is led by the chair of the Estonian Parliament’s Foreign Affair Committee, Marko Mihkelson who also visited Taiwan in 2023, reported CNA.
In a press release, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that this is the first time the Foreign Affairs Committee of Estonia’s Parliament has organized a delegation to Taiwan. The trip represents the strengthening ties between Taiwan and Estonia, said the foreign ministry.
Other members of the delegation include committee members Henn Polluaas, Eerik-Niiles Kross, Ester Karuse, and Luisa Roivas. The committee’s Head of Secretariat Birgit Keerd-Leppik is also in attendance.
The delegation’s visit to Taiwan follows a diplomatic trip to South Korea where the lawmakers discussed issues of national security and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where North Korean soldiers are reportedly supporting the Russian war effort.
During their time in Taiwan, the group has plans to meet with President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Vice President of the Legislative Yuan Johnny Chiang (江啟臣). They will also meet with government officials, according to a press release.
The delegation will take part in discussions at the European Economic and Trade Office, and the European Values Center for Security Policy think tank. It is also expected to visit Kinmen County and learn more about conditions in the Taiwan Strait.
