TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Three packages containing 76 new firearms, known as cloud arrows (穿雲箭), were seized through police raids conducted on Oct. 8, 9, and 14.
The National Police Agency (NPA) said Wednesday (Oct. 30) that a task force was formed to investigate illegal online sales. Initial ballistic testing suggest the arms have lethal capabilities. Further forensic analysis is being conducted by the Forensic Science Center.
The cloud arrows, which were imported from China, possess a metal barrel, a grip, and a firing mechanism. When loaded with gunpowder, they can launch steel ball bearings.
The weapons are classified as "other types of firearms capable of firing metal bullets or pellets with lethal force" under Taiwan's Firearms, Ammunition, and Knives Control Act. The manufacture, sale, transportation, or possession of such firearms is against Article 8 of the Act.
Multiple individuals, including a man surnamed Lin (林), have been identified as suspects in the illegal sale of these firearms. Lin was arrested on Oct. 17 in New Taipei City but has since been released by prosecutors, according to UDN.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to apprehend other involved parties. The Criminal Police Bureau has instructed online platforms to remove listings for these items and has requested increased customs inspections.
To prevent legal repercussions, the public is strongly advised to refrain from purchasing or possessing these illegal firearms.
