TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Police found 32.61 kilograms of marijuana in the luggage of a dental assistant arriving at Taoyuan International Airport on a flight from Canada, reports said Wednesday (Oct. 30).
After the 30-year-old woman arrived in Taiwan on Aug. 4, X-rays showed suspicious objects in two pieces of luggage, CNA reported.
During questioning by the Aviation Police Bureau, the woman from Toronto said financial problems had led her to accept an offer to transport drugs from Canada to Taiwan while posing as a tourist.
The Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office took over the investigation and indicted the Canadian. She could face a prison term of 10 years to life or a fine of up to NT$15 million (US$468,000) for smuggling a class-two drug into the country.
