TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Washington Office Managing Director Ingrid Larson arrived in Taiwan on Monday (Oct. 28) for talks to enhance bilateral ties.
Larson will meet with local officials during her five-day visit “as part of the United States’ strong commitment to Taiwan and to advance growing US-Taiwan partnership,” according to AIT. Discussions will include US-Taiwan collaboration on regional security and trade, and people-to-people, educational, and cultural ties.
Larson’s visit comes after the US Department of State announced the possible sale of three National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), 123 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles-Extended Range (AMRAAM-ER), and two radar systems on Saturday, according to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency. The arms package will improve Taiwan’s overall air defense operations, the Ministry of National Defense said.
The US issued a joint statement with South Korea and Japan at a trilateral meeting in Washington, DC reiterating their support of peace in the Taiwan Strait last week. They emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and urged the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues, according to the White House.
