TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck east Taiwan on Sunday (Oct. 27).
The quake struck at 6:21 p.m. approximately 3 km northeast of Hualien County Hall. Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration (CWA) recorded a focal depth of 17.7 kilometers for the quake.
Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location. On Sunday evening, an intensity level of 4 was reported in Hualien and part of Nantou County, with most of Taiwan experiencing an intensity of 1 or 2.
The quake that struck Hualien came shortly after a series of multiple earthquakes in Chiayi County on the west side of the Central Mountain Range. Those quakes ranged from magnitude 3.1 to the largest with a magnitude 4.9.
