TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) visited Guatemala, one of Taiwan’s Central American allies, from Oct. 24 -25 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
In his meeting with Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo, Lin thanked him for his strong support of the bilateral friendship and emphasized that Taiwan remains a steadfast ally to Guatemala, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said. Lin lauded Taiwan’s assistance to the Central American nation and shared plans for cooperative initiatives to benefit locals. He said Taiwan will strengthen economic and industrial cooperation to help elevate Guatemalan industries.
The foreign minister also met with his Guatemalan counterpart, Carlos Martinez, who hosted a reception to commemorate the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Lin expressed gratitude to Guatemala for supporting Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly and the UN. He also urged Guatemala to continue vouching for Taiwan in the upcoming UN COP29 conference.
Lin’s wife was invited by Guatemala's First Lady Lucrecia Peinado to visit the town of Sumpango to learn about Guatemala's unique kite-making culture. The two also toured the National Palace of Culture and enjoyed local musical and folk dance performances.
The friendship between Taiwan and Guatemala remains strong, MOFA said. This year, high-ranking Guatemalan officials have visited Taiwan, signifying Guatemala’s recognition of Taiwan’s importance.
