TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The India Taipei Association (ITA) and the Kaohsiung City Government held the 2024 Diwali Festival celebration at Weiwuying Metropolitan Park on Saturday (Oct. 26).
This marks the first time the event was held in Kaohsiung. It featured authentic Indian cuisine and handicraft stalls, along with Indian music and dance performances, showcasing the diversity and richness of Indian culture, according to ITA.
A five-minute fireworks display lit up the Kaohsiung night sky, symbolizing the blessings brought by Diwali.
ITA Director General Manharshinh Yadav said Diwali is typically celebrated with close friends. Yadav praised Kaohsiung as the capital of Taiwanese music and culture, resonating with India's love for music and dance. He pointed out that Diwali celebrates Lord Rama's victory over the evil demon, similar to how Kaohsiung quickly recovers from typhoons.
Additionally, Diwali serves as a reminder of the goodness of people, just as Fo Guang Shan brings positive energy to many in Kaohsiung and Taiwan, the director said. He wished everyone in Taiwan and India a happy Diwali.
Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) pointed out India’s rich and diverse culture. He also mentioned his love for Indian curry. The mayor promised to gift Yadav a custom jacket the next time he visited Kaohsiung as gratitude for his support.
Chen emphasized that Taiwan and India share many values, including democracy and freedom. Bilateral cooperation in trade, technology, tourism, and culture is also continuing to deepen, he added.
Chen looked forward to collaborating with more Indian cities in the future.
