TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan has revoked the passports of 200 convicted criminals who left the country so far this year, reports said Friday (Oct. 25).
The Supreme Prosecutors Office has also developed a tracking system with the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) to monitor the fugitives’ passport situation, per CNA. As a result, it will be more difficult for the wanted criminals to move around overseas.
The presence of Taiwanese fugitives overseas damaged the credibility of the judiciary and the international reputation of the country, the Supreme Prosecutors Office said. Some fugitives would commit more crimes overseas, creating law-and-order problems.
Once a convicted criminal who had exhausted all appeals escaped overseas, prosecutors apply to BOCA for the cancellation of their passport. The approval of the cancellation makes it virtually impossible for the fugitive to travel to other countries.
The 200 individuals whose passports have been canceled this year were all sentenced to prison for three years or more, and included some high-profile financial criminals.
The new information system launched on a trial basis in August and makes a faster exchange of information between BOCA and the judiciary possible, according to prosecutors.
