TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A New Taipei Detective has been arrested under suspicion of misappropriating heroin confiscated in a drug bust.
The detective surnamed Chen (陳) and two other police officers were questioned in connection with the case on Tuesday (Oct. 22), and Chen was detained without visitation rights on Wednesday (Oct. 23), per CNA.
New Taipei City prosecutors said that Chen was detained on suspicion of serious criminal wrongdoing and because he may flee or destroy evidence. Prosecutors’ investigation reportedly began after it was discovered that 10 grams of heroin were missing from items confiscated by police in early 2023.
Chen has been suspended from duty, and prosecutors said any other police officers involved in the alleged crime will be held accountable. The Criminal Investigation Bureau said it would strengthen ethical and disciplinary requirements in response to the case, and emphasized its policy of “no cover-ups, no defending wrongdoing, no letting (wrongdoers) off easily.”
