TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Ministry of Examination is collecting opinions about a move to scrap height requirements and a ban on tattoos for police officers, reports said Saturday (Oct. 19).
The Constitutional Court ruled in May that setting height requirements for police officers and firefighters was unconstitutional. The case had been brought by a woman who was disqualified for being less than 160 centimeters tall following her successful completion of the civil service exam.
The height requirements of 165 cm for men and 160 cm for women led to the disqualification of 10% of male applicants and 55% of female applicants for police jobs, per CNA. Acting on a request from the Ministry of Interior to do away with the height rules based on manpower needs, the Ministry of Examination said it was canvassing opinions about the change.
A separate letter from the interior ministry dated Oct. 8 said tattoos were personal expression. As a result, the Ministry of Examination said it had decided to combine quashing the ban on tattoos with the proposal to end height requirements. The changes are expected to take effect next year.
