TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — China is creating a new normal in the Taiwan Strait, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said in a keynote speech on Wednesday (Oct. 16).
Beijing is carrying out gray zone activities in the Taiwan Strait, which seriously affect regional and cross-strait peace and stability, Lin said, per a foreign ministry press release. It has intensified its military intimidation of Taiwan by forming new policies, employing media, and engaging in cognitive warfare to increase pressure on Taiwan, he said.
The foreign minister said Taiwan is grateful for steadfast US support for its defense, including programs like Foreign Military Financing and Presidential Drawdown Authority. Taiwan continues to increase its defense budget and enhance national resilience and defense capabilities, he added.
He hoped Taiwan and the US would continue strengthening supply chain resilience and cooperate in vital sectors through platforms such as the Taiwan-US Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue.
Lin said Taiwan has a comprehensive approach to diplomacy. He said the foreign ministry seeks to assist other countries with their national development.
Under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework, Taiwan is ready to expand cooperation with other nations to address global challenges and transition from "solidifying partnerships" to maintaining "flourishing partnerships."
The foreign minister stressed that Taiwan needs the world, and the world needs Taiwan. Taiwan will continue working closely with allies and partners, he pledged.
