TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake jolted east Taiwan on Sunday (Oct. 13) evening.
The quake struck at 7:36 p.m. approximately 11 km northwest of Hualien County Hall. Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration (CWA) recorded a focal depth of 18.7 kilometers for the quake.
The 4.9 magnitude quake comes less than 48 hours after a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Hualien on Friday (Oct. 11), with an epicenter approximately 40 kilometers south of Sunday’s quake. Between quakes on Friday and Sunday, CWA also reported two lower intensity earthquakes with magnitudes 3.3 and 4.0 on Saturday (Oct. 12), occurring at 3:06 a.m. and 12:24 p.m., respectively.
Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
During Sunday’s quake, Hualien, along with parts of Nantou and Taichung, registered an intensity level of four around the epicenter. An intensity level of one or two was felt in most areas of northern and central Taiwan.
