TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chiaming Lake in the Taitung mountains received a top up during Typhoon Krathon to reach full water levels.
The forestry bureau’s Chao Tsung-hua (趙聰華) said he and other bureau staff were glad to see the lake full when they reached it for the first time after the storm passed, CNA reported on Friday (Oct. 11). Chao said the extra rainfall may mean the lake stays full until the end of the year.
“The lake no longer looks like a poached egg,” Chao said, referring to the ring of dirt that appears around the lake’s edge when water levels drop. In March the lake had shrunk by more than 40% due to a lack of rainfall, though now Chao said it has “had enough to drink.”
The Taitung branch of the forestry bureau said the Chiaming Lake National Trail and accommodation facilities were reopened on Oct. 8 after post-typhoon safety inspections were completed. Tourists have already returned to the trail since it was reopened.
Chiaming Lake is about 3,310 meters above sea level and can be reached by a 25-kilometer return hike. It is referred to as Cidanuman Buan in the local Bunun language.
