TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The families of the victims of a deadly outbreak of bongkrek acid poisoning in Taipei in March will each receive NT$1.8 million (US$55,940) in compensation, reports said Friday (Oct. 11).
Diners became ill after eating at the vegetarian Polam Kopitiam Malaysian restaurant inside a shopping mall in Xinyi District. While at least 18 people infected with bongkrek left the hospital, six died, one as late as June.
The families of five had agreed to accept the NT$1.8 million compensation offer mediated by the Association for Victims Support (AVS) and the Ministry of Justice, while one was still considering the offer, per CNA. The AVS is continuing to assist with living expenses and legal action.
The owner of Polam Kopitiam, surnamed Li (黎), had been barred from leaving Taiwan. The manager of the Xinyi branch and two chefs have also been questioned by prosecutors in an investigation involving the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation and negligent homicide.
