TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — National Taiwan University (NTU) ranked No. 172 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, down 20 spots from last year.
On Wednesday (Oct. 9), THE announced its World University Rankings 2025. The University of Oxford set a new record by ranking first worldwide for the ninth consecutive year, while NTU is Taiwan’s highest-ranking institution. NTU ranked 152nd in 2024 and 187th in 2023.
The second-highest-ranked Taiwanese university is China Medical University, falling within the 301-350 range. Other Taiwanese universities that made the list are ranked 401st and below.
In the 401-500 range are Asia University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Tsing Hua University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, and Taipei Medical University.
This is the 21st time THE has released world university rankings. This year, 2,092 universities and colleges from 115 countries and regions were included.
THE told CNA that 47 Taiwanese universities made the list this time, an increase of two compared to last year. Among the top 10 ranked Taiwanese universities, only NTU dropped in rank, while the rankings of the other universities remained similar.
Of the 47 Taiwanese universities included in the global rankings, only two saw rankings rise from the previous year.
THE’s analysis showed that, compared to the global average, Taiwanese universities performed particularly well in the "Industry" indicator. However, there is room for improvement in the indicators for "Research Quality," "Teaching," and "International Outlook."
