TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Coast Guard patrol responded to a fire aboard a fishing vessel 500 meters off the coast of Hsinchu at 11 a.m. on Monday (Oct. 7).
Upon arriving at the scene, the Coast Guard patrol contacted the fishing boat captain who said the fire had been extinguished and both the crew and boat were safe. Arrangements had been made to tow it back to Hsinchu Fishing Harbor, per CNA.
The Coast Guard was accompanying the boat as it was towed back when the fire restarted and quickly engulfed the entire vessel. Three crew members (one Taiwanese and two Indonesians) dove overboard.
The crew were picked up by the Coast Guard patrol boat, which deployed water lines to fight the fire. After bringing it under control, the fishing boat was finally towed back to the harbor.
The Coast Guard said no oil was spilled from the fire. However, it issued a warning to nearby ships to undertake visual surveillance for floating debris when navigating the area.
