TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's Kevin Yu (俞俊安) bagged the first PGA Tour win of his career at the Sanderson Farms Championship on Sunday (Oct. 6).
The 26-year-old Yu shot 66 in each of the first three rounds, according to CNA. This placed him two strokes behind the leader heading into the final round.
In the final round, Yu shot a five-under 67 with six birdies and one bogey. The most crucial moment came on the 18th hole, where he was trailing by one stroke.
Yu sank a 15-foot birdie putt, bringing his total a 23-under-par 265 for the four days, tying with leader Beau Hossler and forcing a four-hole playoff with two rounds on the 18th and two rounds on the 10th.
Yu ended it quickly on the first attempt on the 18th. He reached the green in two strokes and sank a six-foot birdie putt to secure the championship.
He is the third Taiwanese player to win on the PGA Tour. Previous winners include C. T. Pan (潘政琮), who won the RBC Heritage in 2019, and Chen Tze-chung (陳志忠), who won the Los Angeles Open in 1987.
When asked to comment on his win, Yu said “I've been dreaming (of) this moment since I was five.” He also thanked his parents who were in attendance: "Without them, I couldn't have done this.”
As for being the third Taiwanese with a PGA Tour win, Yu said, “I think it means a lot for all Taiwanese.” Yu said Taiwan has many talented junior players, but they face many challenges in terms of inadequate course conditions in Taiwan and gaining access to the US college system.
Yu said he and C. T. Pan can show young Taiwanese athletes, “We can do it by working really hard and having a clear mindset and dream big.”
