TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Four people died and one went missing in Taiwan during Typhoon Krathon, while agriculture suffered NT$350 million (US$10.82 million) in damage, reports said Saturday (Oct. 5).
While the typhoon disintegrated after landing in Kaohsiung on Thursday (Oct. 3), abundant rainfall caused widespread damage in the south and far north of Taiwan. Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Keelung, and coastal parts of New Taipei suffered flooding and landslides.
The four deaths included a man in his 70s who fell while trimming trees near his home in Hualien's Shoufeng Township on Tuesday (Oct. 1). In neighboring Taitung, a 66-year-old man drove his truck into a rock that had fallen onto the road on Monday (Sept. 30).
The two most recent casualties were a couple, aged 65 and 51, found dead near their home in Jinshan, New Taipei on Saturday morning. The district was one of the areas worst hit by flooding the previous day, per CNA.
The missing person was reportedly a migrant worker who was swept away by waves on a beach in Yunlin's Taixi Township on Tuesday.
As for farm damage, Pingtung was the worst hit, with losses estimated at NT$220 million, followed by Kaohsiung at NT$88.16 million. Banana plantations suffered the most during the storm, but the harvest of other types of fruit, including guavas, dates, papayas, and lemons, had also suffered.
