TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two bodies were found in New Taipei's Jinshan District on Saturday (Oct. 5) after a couple was reported missing the previous evening.
The north coast of Taiwan was severely impacted by heavy rainfall on Friday (Oct. 4). This resulted in widespread flooding, particularly in the historic Jinshan Old Street, per CNA.
A couple was reported missing late Friday night. After an extensive search, the fire department confirmed that the bodies of the two individuals were found Saturday morning, and had been swept away by rapidly rising waters.
The 65-year-old man's body was discovered at the scene, showing no signs of life. Approximately 50 minutes later, the body of the 51-year-old woman was located, in cardiac arrest. Families of both victims declined further medical treatment.
By Saturday morning, the rain had subsided in Jinshan Old Street, and floodwaters began to recede. A reported 527 mm of rain fell in just 12 hours.
A total of 625 mm of rain was recorded within 24 hours. This made it the most severe rainfall Jinshan has experienced in decades.
