TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taipei Representative Office in Hungary hosted a National Day reception on Thursday (Oct. 3) evening, strengthening ties and promoting mutual understanding between Taiwan and Hungary.
The event offered a selection of Taiwanese delicacies to eat. Also, Taiwanese violinist Hsiao Dao-yuan (蕭道圓) captivated the audience with traditional Taiwanese folk songs, per CNA.
Over 200 prominent figures from Hungary's political, academic, and diplomatic communities attended the event. Guests included the Momentum party’s Ferenc Gelencser and Miklos Hajnal, and Hungarian Parliament independent member Akos Hadhazy.
In his address, Representative Liu Shih-chung (劉世忠) praised the outstanding achievements of both Taiwan and Hungary at the Paris Olympics. He also emphasized the strong ties between the two countries, encompassing parliamentary exchanges, education, trade, culture, tourism, and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
Liu highlighted Taiwan's achievement as the first democratic nation to successfully conduct presidential and legislative elections in 2024. This showcases the nation's resilience and commitment to democratic principles.
Liu stressed Taiwan's unwavering resolve to protect its sovereignty and democratic values in the face of increasing global challenges posed by China. He also emphasized Taiwan's indispensable role in the global semiconductor supply chain, citing Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) recent investment in Germany as a testament to Taiwan's dedication to international collaboration.
Construction of TSMC's semiconductor wafer fabrication plant in Dresden will commence this autumn. The plant is expected to be fully operational by this year's fourth quarter and begin mass production in 2027, per CNA.
TSMC's strategy is to expand its overseas wafer fabs, TSMC chair C.C. Wei (魏哲家) said. The company is investing in the US' Arizona and Japan's Kumamoto and plans to invest in Europe in the future.
To foster deeper cultural exchange, the representative office partnered with Chi Mei Frozen Food and Taiwanese eateries in Hungary to showcase a diverse range of Taiwanese delicacies. These offerings included Taiwan Beer, fried dumplings, taro buns, sesame buns, and braised pork rice.
