TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Video surfaced on Thursday (Oct. 3) showing a teenager struggling to cross a street with an umbrella as he was battered by winds from Typhoon Krathon.
Krathon made landfall in Kaohsiung's Siaogang District at 12:40 p.m., making it the first typhoon in history to strike the city in October, per CNA. Kaohsiung Harbor reported record Beaufort scale level 17 winds and by 3 p.m., typhoon was packing maximum sustained winds of 126 kph, with gusts of up to 162 kph.
Just before Krathon's arrival, a Threads user posted a video of a teenage boy trying to cross a small street next to a FamilyMart in Kaohsiung's Fengshan District, per New-Reporter. Due to the strong wind, the teen was forced to crouch low and try to use the umbrella as a shield as he inched toward the crosswalk.
However, he only managed to walk past the first stripe on the zebra crossing before the wind pushed him back, forcing him to retreat to the FamilyMart entrance.
Kaohsiung was the hardest-hit area by Typhoon Krathon with sheet metal roofs sent flying, flooding spotted in the Museum of Fine Arts area, 137 people injured, and 1,036 reports of damage.
