TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Keelung's daily rainfall hit a record 373 mm Thursday (Oct. 3) evening due to Typhoon Krathon's outer rainbands, the Central Weather Administration said.
The Keelung weather station was established in 1955. The previous record was 351 mm on Sept. 23, 1980, due to the northeast monsoon, per CNA.
Heavy rains caused flooding and landslides in Keelung. Ren 2nd Road, Ren 4th Road, and Xiangfeng St. experienced mudslides and flooding. Landslides and flooding also occurred at Lane 3 Maijin Road, Sankeng Station, and Yi 1st Road and Xin 5th Road intersection, per CNA.
Due to a mudslide, Lane 3 Maijin Road was temporarily closed to traffic. Residents in nearby areas were advised to find alternative routes.
The intersection of Dongxin Road and Dongguang Road also experienced flooding. A video captured a rider and their scooter floating in the floodwaters, while another rider was seen attempting a rescue.
Diaohe Street was also flooded. The nearby Vita Hospital was affected, with muddy water flowing into the building.
The city government deployed waterproof barriers to help contain the flooding.
