TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Metal roofs on top-story structures were sent flying by Typhoon Krathon in Kaohsiung on Thursday (Oct. 3).
Krathon, the 18th tropical storm of the year, made landfall in Kaohsiung's Siaogang District at 12:40 p.m., according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). At 3:15 p.m., the typhoon was packing maximum sustained winds of 126 kph, with gusts of up to 162 kph.
During Krathon's arrival, Kaohsiung Harbor reported record winds of level 17 on the Beaufort scale, per NowNews. Residents witnessed the roof of a house near the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism in Siaogang District being blown off by strong gusts, reported SET News.
A video of the incident shows the metal roof being blown several meters away before crashing onto a neighboring rooftop and disintegrating.

In Fengshan District, a resident witnessed the entire metal roof of a house across the street being blown off. Kaohsiung real estate agent Lee Cheng-ting(李澄婷) (Threads user oliveli33) uploaded the video.
First, one corner lifted, and within seconds, the entire roof, along with the side panels flying hundreds of meters away, landing on another metal roof. She exclaimed, “Unbelievable! The roof across the street has disintegrated and shattered into pieces everywhere.”
In Kaohsiung's Renwu District, several metal roofs were blown down by the typhoon, per New-Reporter.com. Much of the debris fell to the street below and damaged parked cars.

In a fourth incident which took place near the Royal Group Hotel Chang Chien Branch in Kaohsiung's Sanmin District, a neighbor captured footage of two adjacent sheet metal roofs starting to rise together in unison.
