TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The eye of Typhoon Krathon arrived in Kaohsiung on Thursday (Oct. 3).
According to the Central Weather Administration (CWA), Krathon, the 18th tropical storm of the year, made landfall in Kaohsiung's Siaogang District at 12:40 p.m.
The CWA at 12:58 p.m. issued an immediate heavy thunderstorm alert for Kaohsiung effective until 2:30 p.m. Residents were advised of severe rainfall, lightning, strong gusts exceeding Beaufort Scale level 9, rapidly rising water levels in rivers and streams, potential flooding in low-lying areas, and reduced visibility.
A land warning is in effect for: Nantou County, Chiayi County, Chiayi, Yilan County, Pingtung County, Changhua County, Hsinchu County, Hsinchu, Taoyuan, Penghu County, Taichung, Tainan, Taitung County, Hualien County, Miaoli County, Yunlin County, and Kaohsiung.
A sea warning is in place for: the Bashi Channel, Dongsha Islands, northeast offshore areas, southeast offshore areas, north Taiwan Strait, and south Taiwan Strait.
The CWA has issued an extremely torrential rain alert for: Keelung, New Taipei, Pingtung County, and Taitung County. A torrential rain advisory has been released for: Taipei, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Hualien.
An extremely heavy rain warning has been announced for: Yunlin County, Chiayi, and Chiayi County. A heavy rain alert has been declared for: Taoyuan, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung, Changhua County, and Nantou County.
A strong wind advisory is in place for: Keelung, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Chiayi, Chiayi County, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung County, Hengchun Peninsula, Orchid Island, Green Island, Penghu County, and Lienchiang County.
