TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport announced at least 59 flight cancellations for Thursday (Oct. 3) after having scrapped 132 flights on Wednesday (Oct.2) due to Typhoon Krathon.
Even though the storm is not expected to make landfall in south Taiwan until late Wednesday night, airlines canceled all domestic flights Wednesday as well as a number of international flights, mostly between Kaohsiung and China.
By 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Taoyuan International Airport Corporation (TIAC) knew of the cancellation of 59 passenger and cargo flights scheduled for Thursday, per CNA. The company called on travelers to check with their airline for updates about the situation as weather conditions changed rapidly.
As rain and winds are likely to increase in strength Thursday, transportation to and from the airport will also be affected, according to TIAC. Airport mass rapid transit and bus companies might change their schedules or suspend services altogether if the weather requires it.
TIAC had prepared more than 5,000 sandbags, 101 mobile water pumps, and 44 mobile generators for emergency use in the case of flooding. In addition, 1,000 bottles of drinking water and 64,000 meals have been ordered for travelers and staff, the company said.
