TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan has provided over NT$127.4 million (US$4 million) in humanitarian aid for communities previously under the control of the Islamic State group over recent years, Taiwan’s US representative office said on Tuesday (Oct. 2).
Representative Alexander Tah-ray Yui (俞大㵢) said Taiwan had provided the aid to affected communities in northeast Syria at the 10th annual meeting of the Global Coalition against Daesh in Washington, D.C. Yui said the aid is provided to help stabilize the middle east.
“This year, Taiwan provided assistance to revitalize civil society in northeast Syria, including efforts in improving public health, enhancing quality of life, and developing the capacity of first responders,” the representative office said in a press release.
“As part of the Coalition and a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to support the Coalition’s work as well as contribute to regional stabilization efforts,” Yui said.
The group’s 87 members have already committed to providing over US$200 million to punish terrorists and improve the lives of displaced people in Iraq and Syria, the US State Department said in a release. During the meeting, the members endorsed raising a further US$194 million to serve this aim.
The Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS is led by the US and was formed in 2014. Its members include nation states and international organizations.
