TAIPEI (Taiwan News) —The New Taipei District Prosecutors Office ordered the detention of a 30-year-old woman, surnamed Chen (陳), on Tuesday (Oct. 1), after she killed a police officer with her car.
The deceased officer, Liu Tsung-hsin (劉宗鑫), head of the Chingshui Police Station in Tucheng Precinct, encountered Chen on a routine check of illegally parked vehicles. After he approached the vehicle, Chen suddenly became uncooperative and drove off with Liu clutching the steering wheel and the door.
Chen dragged Liu approximately 500 meters before ramming him into a construction wall. He sustained severe injuries were severe and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, per CNA.
Chen fled the scene of the accident on foot. Hours later, Chen was arrested at her friend's residence along with two friends. Police found amphetamines and etomidate, commonly known as "zombie cartridges," in her bag.
The discovery led police to suspect Chen was on drugs at the time of the deadly accident, though the results of her urine test are still pending. Chen has a record of multiple drug convictions.
Chen was later turned over to the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office for charges ranging from homicide, drug use, and obstruction of official duties. A judge rule in favor of her detention based upon the severity of her charges and her potential as a flight risk.
