TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — More than 50% of Taiwanese encounter fraud weekly, according to a report by the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA), ScamAdviser, and Gogolook.
The Asia Fraud Survey Report, which surveyed nearly 25,000 respondents across 13 regions, identified the top three types of fraud in Taiwan, per CNA. Personal information theft (24%) was the most common, followed by shopping fraud (15%) and corporate impersonation fraud (13%).
The report also found that nearly 30% of Taiwanese turned over money or personal information within one hour of encountering fraud. About 19% of victims were deceived within a few days, while 15% experienced scams that lasted for weeks, months, or even years.
When asked which digital platforms they had been scammed on, Facebook ranked first at 63%. The report noted that Facebook scams often involve fake investment experts or false advertisements luring victims into fraudulent investments or financial products.
Additionally, 47% of Taiwanese who reported fraud had been scammed on LINE, with scams often involving fake investment groups. The report also noted that fraud methods have become increasingly diverse, including tactics like phishing polls or requests for assisted authentication that trick people into entering personal information.
The survey further revealed that 40% of Taiwanese respondents believed they had received AI-generated fraudulent messages.
