TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Fair Trade Commission has yet to formally accept an application to merge Foodpanda and Uber Eats, legislators heard on Monday (Sept. 30).
Fair Trade Commission Head Li Mei (李鎂) spoke to the legislature’s economic committee and said that the possible merger of the food delivery platforms is awaiting further data, per CNA. He did not provide a timeframe for when the application would be received.
Uber said in May that it had reached an agreement to acquire Foodpanda for NT$30.09 billion (US$950 million) in cash.
Li said the commission has held several meetings with interested parties in preparation for the application, as the possible merger has attracted wide interest from different sectors of society. She said any future merger assessment will be based on ensuring market competition and the Fair Trade Law.
According to a government think tank report published in February, 71% of internet users in Taiwan used food delivery platforms in 2023. Over 73% of those users said they had ordered from Foodpanda and over 57% from Uber Eats.
