TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Yangmingshan National Park opened a new volcano exhibition that includes science lessons, modern high-tech volcano monitoring equipment, and a tunnel that simulates the sounds and smells of a volcano.
The exhibition is located within Jingshan Nature Center, which serves as the research base of Yangmingshan National Park. This center houses Datun Volcano Observatory and exhibits on volcanoes and endemic animal and plant species.
Yangmingshan National Park Management Office Director Sun Wei-jie (孫維潔) said funding from the National Science Council in 2023 allowed Jingshan Nature Center to enhance its scientific displays. They introduced modern display technology and a simulated volcano tunnel that recreates smells, temperatures, and sounds of volcanoes, per CNA.
The office also designed a new guided tour for the exhibition area, adding topics such as volcanic eruptions, lava flows, and wild animals. The exhibit introduces the national park’s ecological resources from a scientific perspective.

Jingshan Nature Center is open for guided tours and group visits of students in the third grade of elementary school and above. Groups between five and 60 people can be accommodated during a single session.
Visits can be arranged every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday (excluding national holidays), with morning sessions from 9 a.m. to noon and afternoon sessions from 2 to 5 p.m. Reservations should be made one month in advance.
The guided tour is free, but visitors engaging in other courses must pay for material costs. The management office said many schools visit the center for field trips and science education.
