TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA) said Typhoon Krathon will have the greatest impact on the country from Tuesday to Thursday (Oct. 1-3).
CWA meteorologist Wu Wan-hua (伍婉華) Monday said that Krathon will intensify as it approaches Taiwan and all areas in its path should be prepared for wind and rain.
Wu said Krathon is expected to turn north during the day Tuesday with a more significant shift likely by Wednesday, when it is expected to make landfall in the south.
On Monday morning, 7.7-meter-high waves were recorded off Orchid Island, and four-meter-high waves in waters off Taitung. In the southeastern waters and the Bashi Channel, wave heights are expected to exceed six meters, and in areas along Krathon's path, waves could reach up to eight meters.
The CWA observed Beaufort scale level 12 winds on Orchid Island and level 9 winds along Taiwan's northwest coast. Taiwan is expected to see more strong winds and high waves as the typhoon approaches.
Krathon's outer circulation could also bring waves of rainfall to Taiwan, while sudden downpours or thunderstorms are likely on Monday, said Wu.
