TAIPEI (Taiwan News) —The Central Weather Administration (CWA) at 2:30 a.m. Monday (Sept. 30) issued a land warning for Typhoon Krathon.
The land warning is in effect for Pingtung County and Taitung County. This follows a sea warning on Sunday (Sept. 29) for the Bashi Channel, Dongsha Islands, offshore areas of southeast Taiwan, and the south Taiwan Strait.
At 3 a.m., the CWA said Krathon was 280 km southeast of Eluanbi, moving west-northwest. It had maximum sustained winds of 155 kph, with gusts of up to 191 kph.
Classes and work are canceled for Lanyu Township on Monday, per the Directorate-General of Personnel Administration.
CWA forecaster Lin Ping-yu (林秉煜) on Sunday said Krathon has entered the Bashi Channel and poses a threat to the waters off southeast Taiwan and the southern part of the Taiwan Strait per CNA. Lin predicted that Krathon would continue to gain strength.
Lin said Krathon has been moving slowly, and its outer circulation has already brought rainfall to Hualien and Taitung counties with significant rainfall expected overnight. Lin said heavy rain warnings will be in effect on Monday for the northern coast of Keelung and the mountainous areas of Greater Taipei, while localized heavy rain or torrential rain is forecasted for the east and the Hengchun Peninsula.
Lin said Krathon's path has continued to adjust westward. It is expected to move south of Eluanbi by Monday evening and then continue moving northwest toward southern coastal areas on Tuesday (Oct. 1). Rain is anticipated across Taiwan on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In addition, strong winds and heavy rain may affect the Kaohsiung-Pingtung area from Tuesday evening to Wednesday.
Although the typhoon will gradually move away from Taiwan on Thursday (Oct. 3), Lin predicted northeasterly winds will still bring heavy rain to the north and northeast.
