TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan issued a sea warning several hours before Typhoon Krathon was declared a typhoon, as the storm approached from the southeast on Sunday (Sept. 29).
Authorities are advising the country, especially eastern and northern Taiwan, to prepare for heavy rain over the next few days, reported CNA. Krathon, categorized as a mid-strength typhoon, is expected to have the most serious impact from Tuesday (Oct. 1) to Wednesday (Oct. 2) morning.
While no work or school closures have been announced as of Sunday night, most public beaches, national parks, and recreational areas will be closed from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. A full list of regularly updated closures is available from CNA.
Following the sea warning issued on Sunday, flights and boat traffic between Taiwan and outlying islands have been suspended through Wednesday.
Residents are advised to take precautions against heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning strikes, particularly in Hualien. The CWA has issued strong wind warnings for Taitung and Pingtung counties.
Drivers should avoid rural mountain roads, which may be at risk of falling rocks, landslides, or collapses. Likewise, low-lying roads near riverbanks may flood due to storm surges.
