TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A group of 102 Taiwanese fraud suspects caught in Bali in July was repatriated to Taiwan, reports said Thursday (Sept. 26).
The news emerged from a Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) news conference held to reward the investigators behind the case. Using Big Data analysis, the officers uncovered a fraud ring which had moved to Indonesia, per CNA.
Police in Bali detained 102 suspects who turned out to be Taiwanese on June 26. As an investigation showed they might have been involved in electronic fraud activities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ office in Jakarta started discussing their repatriation with Indonesia’s immigration service.
From June 29, CIB officers traveled to Indonesia to pick up the suspects and accompany them back to Taiwan. The Taichung District Prosecutors Office detained 50 incommunicado, while five were jailed for other crimes.
The Cabinet’s anti-fraud committee urged law enforcement and immigration services to improve their cross-department coordination and strengthen their links with similar organizations overseas in order to combat transnational fraud successfully by sharing information.
