TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — US President Joe Biden underscored peace in the Taiwan Strait in his speech at the 79th UN General Assembly.
Biden said the US is “unabashed” in its fight against unfair economic competition and military coercion in the South China Sea, in maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, and in protecting advanced technologies.
The president pledged to continue growing the network of partnerships in the Indo-Pacific. “These partnerships are not against any nation,” he said, adding, “They are building blocks for a free, open, secure, and peaceful Indo-Pacific.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs thanked Biden for his reaffirmation of support for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The ministry vowed to continue cooperating with the US and other like-minded countries to safeguard peace, stability, and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and the region.
Th foreign ministry pointed out that Biden reiterated his commitment to the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region at the QUAD leaders’ summit last week.
The US will soon establish the Partnership for Indo-Pacific Industrial Resilience with its allies, including Taiwan, according to Jedidiah Royal, the US principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs.
The Pentagon will host the first meeting in Hawaii in approximately two weeks, with at least 12 Indo-Pacific and European allies participating, he said. The initiative aims to streamline the production of weapons systems.
