TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) reiterated criticism of China’s "distortion" of UN Resolution 2758 to claim Taiwan is a part of China.
In a pre-recorded speech at the 2024 Concordia Annual Summit in New York on Tuesday (Sept. 24), Lai rejected China’s stance regarding UN Resolution 2758, per CNA. He said China “distorted” the resolution by linking it with its “one China” principle.
Passed in 1971, UN Resolution 2758 addressed China's representation at the UN. It recognized the People's Republic of China (PRC) as “the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations,” and Taiwan, officially named the Republic of China (ROC), was expelled from the body.
After Lai’s video speech, Taiwan’s representative to the US Alexander Tah-ray Yui (俞大㵢) discussed the resolution with former US Under Secretary of State Keith Krach. Yui said Beijing was misinterpreting UN Resolution 2578 to prove Taiwan belongs to China, but he emphasized China has never ruled Taiwan.
He said the resolution can not determine whether Taiwan is included in the UN or other affiliated bodies.
