TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Past and present employees of New Taipei’s Gold Apollo were questioned on Monday (Sept. 23) as part of an investigation into the company whose name and branding appeared on pagers that exploded across Lebanon and Syria last week.
Taipei prosecutors said that a former and a current employee of the company had been questioned by the Criminal Investigation Bureau’s national security wing, per CNA. Two other current Gold Apollo employees are also assisting in an ongoing and extensive investigation, prosecutors added.
The offices of Gold Apollo and BAC Consulting’s Taiwan branch have been searched since the pager explosions, and Gold Apollo’s founder and director Hsu Ching-kuang (許清光) has also been questioned.
The New York Times reported that anonymous US and other officials said Israel had planted explosives into a shipment of pagers from Gold Apollo. However, Gold Apollo maintains that it did not manufacture the devices that exploded, stating that it had only licensed the use of its brand to BAC Consulting.
Prosecutors cautioned against speculation regarding the facts of the case, reiterating that investigations are ongoing.
Lebanon’s health minister said that 12 people were killed and around 2,800 were wounded when pagers suddenly exploded across Lebanon and Syria on Wednesday (Sept. 18).
