TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – An attendance record was set at Taipei Dome as 40,000 attended a CPBL professional baseball game on Saturday (Sept. 21) witnessing the retirement of CTBC Brothers' outfielder, Chou Szu-chi (周思齊).
Billed as “The Last Together,” the retirement event celebrated Chou's career, which stretched nearly 20 years, the vast majority of which he completed with the Brothers. He exhibited exceptional plate discipline earning lots of walks, and an outstanding batting average.
Chou is also notable for surviving many match-fixing scandals that plagued the early years of Taiwan’s professional baseball, per UDN. For the last game, Chou reunited with former teammates for one last visit to the ballpark.
Chou was also a favorite of local rock band, Mayday, who took the opportunity to perform for fans after the match involving CTBC Brothers and Wei Chuan Dragons. Befitting his final game, CTBC Brothers raced out a lead in the third inning and won by a score of 4-2.
As Chou’s career ends at age 42, his accomplishments include being the last active ballplayer from the defunct Macoto Cobras. He was also the ninth player in the league to reach 1,000 hits, 100 home runs, and 100 stolen bases.
Chou has played in 1,761 games and three championships and was the 2012 season MVP.
