TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese weightlifting star Chen Guan-ling (陳冠伶) claimed three gold medals in women’s 55 kg on Saturday (Sept. 21) at the World Junior Weightlifting Championships in Leon, Spain.
Chen lifted 98 kg in the snatch, 119 kg in clean and jerk, and a total of 217 kg, per CNA. These numbers broke the national records she previously held.
Nineteen-year-old Chen competed in the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, where she was the youngest female member of the Taiwanese weightlifting team and finished in fourth, per Liberty Times. She also won three gold medals at last year’s junior championships.
Reflecting on her performance, Chen thanked her family and friends for their support which helped her overcome injuries and other challenges. “My goal was to set world records here, and I intend to do the same in Bahrain,” she declared.
The 2024 IWF (International Weightlifting Federation) World Weightlifting Championships will be held in Bahrain in December. Chen said she not only aims to dominate the junior level but also plans to rechallenge the senior level.
