TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — There are no records of Gold Apollo pagers being exported to Lebanon from Taiwan in recent years, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said on Wednesday (Sept. 19), after pagers exploded across Lebanon and Syria injuring several thousand and killing at least nine.
The ministry said its records from 2022 to August 2024 show Gold Apollo exported around 260,000 pagers mostly to the US or European countries, per CNA. Enquiries with the company also confirmed there were no exports to the country, it said.
The ministry said the pagers Gold Apollo manufactures contain a battery equivalent in size to a AA, and could not cause explosions that injure or kill people.
Shortly after the attack Reuters said its analysis of pictures of pagers that exploded showed markings consistent with those used on pagers made by Gold Apollo. The firm subsequently denied it manufactured the devices, and said they were made by a company in Europe named BAC.
The explosions were allegedly caused by Israel and targeted members of Hezbollah, who began using pagers in an apparent attempt to ensure their communications were not intercepted, per Reuters. Sources within Lebanon's security agency told Reuters that Israel’s Mossad spy agency planted explosives in 5,000 pagers imported by Hezbollah in the months before the attack.
