TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — An American earth imaging company conducted an analysis last month of an amphibious training exercise in China’s Fujian Province.
On Aug. 28, Planet Labs PBC performed a geospatial intelligence assessment of what it identified as likely a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) amphibious landing drill in Fujian’s Dacheng Bay. The company noted that this area is frequently used by the PLA for amphibious maneuvers.
The analysis revealed numerous amphibious craft approaching the coastline, accompanied by amphibious fighting vehicles. Planet Labs indicated that the vessels likely included a Yupen (Type 271) class landing craft participating in the apparent training exercise.
The firm also observed a significant concentration of military vehicles and equipment inland from the drills, which it suggested were likely tied to the ongoing training maneuvers.
On Sept. 4, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) announced that it had detected the PLA conducting a joint amphibious exercise at Dacheng Bay. According to the MND, the drills included fighter jets, auxiliary aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles working in coordination with amphibious vessels and roll-on/roll-off ships transporting ground forces.
The ministry emphasized that Taiwan’s armed forces are closely monitoring the region’s activities through joint intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations.
