TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The ABV Southeast Asian Restaurant in Taipei has released a special menu spotlighting Malaysian cuisine.
The limited-time offer, available until Nov. 30, features eight dishes including sambal petai squid, marmite fish, and belacan fried chicken wings. For dessert, diners can order cendol to cap off the meal. While dishes like nasi lemak and char kway teow are amongst the famous dishes, this menu spotlights lesser-known food.
Sambal petai squid incorporates the sambal spice and the stink bean's strong aroma. The two components give the squid a unique taste.
Marmite fish uses the British yeast extract spread to give it a deep savory flavor. The fish is fried until crispy golden brown before mixing it with a marmite-laden sauce made sweet with sugar or honey.
Belacan chicken wings are marinated in a sauce made from belacan (shrimp paste) and other seasonings before deep-frying. They are typically served with a side of hot sauce.
Malaysian cuisine is influenced by Malay, Indian, and Chinese cooking traditions. Ingredients such as lemongrass and chili peppers give dishes bold, fragrant flavors and spice.
ABV executive chef Tsai Zhen-nan (蔡勝男) said the event was intentionally scheduled for mid-September to coincide with Malaysia Day and Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, which fall on Sept. 16 and 15, respectively.
In June, the restaurant launched an event spotlighting Filipino cuisine. Tsai led a team to the Philippines’ Luzon Island to research and experience the rich history, culture, and cuisine.
